Visual Artist

I am a visual multimedia artist currently practicing in Grass Valley, CA. Through sculpture, photography, poetry, painting, and zine-making, I create intimate, raw works of art that command viewers to consider their relationship to the Self, and how they view self identity, often through a feminist lens. Using text, my work deals with dynamics of power, and questions who is in charge, and who is compliant. From an emotional standpoint, I observe how these dynamics are brought into our daily lives. Taking influence from artists such as Louise Bourgeois, Eva Hesse, Francesca Woodman, and Barbara Krueger, my art celebrates organic shapes, text, and is led by emotion. I create art to process trauma and make sense of my place in the world, often forging multiple mediums to create disorienting, obstinate, mournful pieces coded in abstraction to allow the viewer to connect individually to the artwork’s messaging and nuances.

I have previously studied at Santa Monica College, and now study at Sierra College, preparing to transfer and obtain my BA.

Process

The most compelling part of the creative process for me is the conceptual stage. I follow my curiosity to an idea, and use references to guide my work to a readable visual form. In my art studio is where these ideas come to fruition. My art speaks to the curious and emotional. Often referencing the human body, my work prods the idea of the self, and how we identify ourselves within the worlds we live in, be they real or imaginary. I spend a lot of time studying, writing, memorizing, and internalizing references to art history and symbolism that inspires me. Artwork must also be led from within. Each piece is unique and can call for different “ingredients” based on these feelings and impulses. I find that allowing myself to be unlimited by medium can empower my artwork. In having this open mindset, creativity can be a cyclical exchange between experience and expression.

My process is not always the same for every piece. Sometimes, I sit down and feel the incessant need to create something, and do not stop until the feeling is expelled from my body, into the artwork. Other times, I am not so spontaneous. I write alot, and I draw and make up plans. Sometimes I follow these plans exactly from start to finish, but more often, I stray from them and the piece becomes something of its own. Sometimes you can try to force something in the way you want it, but it does not always submit to you. In this way my art can be stubborn and rebellious. Consequently, I approach new projects with curiosity, and take time to experiment with different materials and methods to find the best suitable for each concept.
